Free Painting Demonstrations

Monday, April 21
10:00 to 12:00 Noon
Oil Painting Demo

Hai-Ou Hou — “Expressivism 101”
Have you ever liked a painting but you weren’t sure why? What the viewer sees on the canvas translates into an emotion.  Using expressive brush work, texture, and a focus on color, you’ll learn how to create an exciting painting that evokes strong emotions in this non-traditional approach. This is not for the timid!  Your paintings will not only be seen, but will get loud enough to be heard!  Look out!

Tuesday, April 22
10:00 to 12:00 Noon
Oil Painting Demo

Tom Bradshaw — “Capturing Strong Color with
a Limited Pallet”

Less is more! Understand the properties of color value, temperature, and saturation by using a limited palette of warm and cool. You’ll learn how to prioritize what you’re seeing as you focus on color relationships and harmony. Even though it seems counterintuitive, this method can be a more efficient way of painting and can even result in more color-rich paintings.

Tuesday, April 22
6:00 to 8:00 pm
Oil Painting Demo

Steve Andrews - “Painting Mood in Plein Air”
As painters, sometimes we are more concerned with getting an accurate likeness of the subject and forget about expressing emotional content. However, most successful paintings are about communicating an idea or a feeling about something, not just photographic duplication.  Anyone with enough time can create an accurate likeness, but why did you paint it?  What is your emotional connection with the subject and how do you communicate that? These are the subjects explored in this demo, as you watch firsthand.

Wednesday, April 23
10:00 to 12:00 Noon
Watercolor Demo

Catherine Hillis — “Simplifying a Complex Scene”
When starting a painting, it’s easy to look at your subject matter or view and feel overwhelmed.  There’s an extraordinary amount of detail, objects, and complexity to capture.  Learn how to simplify your design and cut out the noisy details to the essence of the painting.  Watch the artist block in the initial composition of the painting based on the simple shapes of darks, lights and middle values. Keep it simple and make it work!

Thursday, April 24
10:00 to 12:00 Noon
Oil Painting Demo

Natalia Andreeva — “Color in Shadows”
Think shadows are all black?  Think again! Learn how to see the color in shadows while doing a plein air portrait. You’ll begin to see that shadows contain highlights and the most unexpected hues, such as crimsons, purples and violets. Consider the shadows to be part of the composition just as much a part of the scene as the figure. No color should be excluded when painting shadows!

Friday, April 25
10:00 to 12:00 Noon
Oil Painting Demo

Bill Farnsworth — “Figures in a Landscape”
Painting the figure and painting the landscape outdoors are equally challenging tasks. In plein air we have the added difficulty of capturing a likeness and the light quickly. This demonstration will teach you how to successfully arrange a model in a garden setting and work outward from the focal point using good shapes, values and edges. The result is a composition where natural color, anatomy, light, and the environment are balanced.
